Use of Generative Design in Interior Designing
Is AI just for the new band wagon only? or it will impact the slow moving design industry as well?
Generative design is an iterative process of factoring out the possibilities of a single design in multiple
options. It contains constraints and parameters that a designer needs to input initially which is why it is
similar in many ways to parametric design. But generative design is more than that, since it simplifies not just the design, but the whole process. The generative design software applies few inputs and uses AI(Artificial Intelligence) to simulate and validate the process all at the same time. This means that the designer will
be able to understand the whole process without having to physically test the products.
The simulations on the software will be accurate.
Generative design has started to become part of the architecture and construction business and it holds
the key to the future of design. There are numerous products used in Interior design and all of them can
be generated with the help of a generative design process easily. It may even help provide new concepts
of interior space with the help of AI. There will be no need to iterate the whole design again and again
manually. Generative design helps with the possibilities associated with the design by showing multiple
options. It even shows the designer the “What ifs” scenarios of their design elements.
How a designer can start on generative interior design process?
While the current designer focuses on the technicalities of the execution of the work, this algorithm-
based design process can easily shift the focus back to the design needs of the user. Some of the most
popular software for generative design is Autodesk Revit, Fusion 360 by Autodesk, Rhinoceros3D, etc. All
of this provides the ability to provide very good generative design features and outputs. Every product
and material used in the interior design such as screws, walls, etc. can be made through the generative
design process.

cater to the creativity of the designer as well as the client. Generative design is the future of the design
world if not the present and designers with basic coding skills can easily achieve great results through it.
